What Songs Should Not Be Played at a Wedding? (And Why!)

When it comes to curating the perfect wedding playlist, most couples focus on which songs to play — their first dance, their grand entrance, the crowd-favorite party tracks. But just as important is knowing which songs to avoid.

Some tunes may bring the energy down, stir up drama, or just feel awkward in a love-filled environment. As your trusted DJ, I’ve compiled a list of song types and examples that are usually best left off the wedding-day soundtrack.

1. Breakup or Cheating Anthems

Even if the beat is hot, the lyrics might not match the wedding vibe. Songs about infidelity or heartbreak can unintentionally kill the romance — or worse, hit a little too close to home for some guests.

Examples to skip:

  • “Before He Cheats” – Carrie Underwood

  • “Cry Me a River” – Justin Timberlake

  • “You Oughta Know” – Alanis Morissette

  • “Take a Bow” – Rihanna

2. Songs About Divorce or Regret

You’d be surprised how many slow jams and ballads are actually about lost love or wishing things had gone differently. Let’s keep the energy on new beginnings, not failed ones.

Examples to skip:

  • “Someone Like You” – Adele

  • “I Will Always Love You” – Whitney Houston (Yes, it's a classic, but it's a goodbye song)

  • “The Scientist” – Coldplay

3. Songs with Inappropriate or Explicit Lyrics

Yes, people want to dance — but keep it classy, especially with elders, kids, or coworkers in the room. Some songs are bangers at the club but a little too spicy for Auntie and Uncle on the dancefloor.

Examples to skip (or use clean edits only):

  • “WAP” – Cardi B & Megan Thee Stallion

  • “My Neck, My Back” – Khia

  • “Anaconda” – Nicki Minaj

4. Songs About Death or Loss

These are beautiful songs — but emotionally heavy and not fit for a celebratory setting unless it's a very intentional dedication (e.g., during a tribute moment).

Examples to skip (unless used thoughtfully):

  • “Tears in Heaven” – Eric Clapton

  • “See You Again” – Wiz Khalifa ft. Charlie Puth

  • “One Sweet Day” – Mariah Carey & Boyz II Men

5. Party Killers (AKA Vibe Crashers)

You might love these songs in another context, but they can drain the energy fast if played during the dancing portion of the night.

Examples to skip or save for dinner/cocktail hour:

  • “The Sound of Silence” – Simon & Garfunkel

  • “Everybody Hurts” – R.E.M.

  • “Creep” – Radiohead

Bonus Tip: Be Mindful of Inside Jokes

Some couples request songs that were part of an inside joke or a past relationship — tread carefully! What’s funny in private might confuse or concern your guests.
