Let me start by saying this loud and clear: I do not hate these songs! They’re popular for a reason. They mean something to couples and guests, and I will always play what my clients love on their wedding day.

That said, after DJing weddings across Alberta for many years, there are a few songs that show up again and again that personally don’t do much for me behind the decks. These are simply my DJ takes, based on energy, danceability, and how they actually perform on a packed dancefloor.

Five Wedding Songs I Struggle With

Here are five songs that are absolute wedding hits in Alberta, and the honest reasons why I struggle with them.

1. “Can’t Stop the Feeling” – Justin Timberlake

This song appears on so many couples’ request lists, and I get why. The lyrics are positive, joyful, and very “wedding-safe.” From a DJ perspective, though, it’s kind of mid. It doesn’t create a big surge of excitement. While it’s upbeat, it’s not especially danceable compared to other feel-good tracks. It tends to keep people swaying rather than fully letting loose. I totally understand the appeal lyrically; it just doesn’t hit hard on the dancefloor for me.

2. “Pink Pony Club” – Chappell Roan

This one had a moment, and then another moment, and then another. For me, it’s officially played out. The original version starts off very slow, which can kill momentum if you’re trying to keep energy high. It doesn’t really become dancefloor-friendly until the chorus hits. Because of that, I almost always opt for high-energy remixes to make it work in a wedding setting. Amazing song, great artist; I’ve just heard it a lot.

3. “Mr. Brightside” – The Killers

When I first started DJing weddings and saw this song constantly on playlists, my honest reaction was: Why though? Yes, it’s catchy. Yes, it’s high-energy rock. And yes, people scream-sing every word. It just wouldn’t be played at my wedding. That’s all I’ll say. I absolutely recognize its power as a crowd-pleaser, but personally? It’s never been my vibe.

4. “Dancing Queen” – ABBA

This one might be the most requested song of all time. Honestly, I’m shocked when it’s not on a wedding playlist. It’s also incredibly… played out. That said, I fully acknowledge its superpower: It gets grandmas, aunties, and multiple generations on the dancefloor at the same time. And that alone earns it a permanent place in wedding history. Not my favorite to cue up, but I respect its legacy.

5. “Paradise by the Dashboard Light” – Meat Loaf

Really? Like… really? This song is 8 and a half minutes long, and people genuinely want to hear the entire thing. I’ve tried to understand it for years, and I’m still confused. It’s dramatic, it’s long, it completely shifts the vibe, and yet it remains wildly popular at Alberta weddings. Someone, someday, is going to have to explain this one to me.

The Importance of Personalization in Your Playlist

Again, these are just my personal takes as a wedding DJ who’s seen hundreds of dancefloors. At the end of the day, I’ll always play what makes my couples happy. Music is emotional, nostalgic, and deeply personal, especially on your wedding day.

It’s never about what the DJ likes; it’s about you and your vibe. If you’re planning your wedding and want help crafting a playlist that truly reflects you while still keeping the dancefloor alive, I’m always happy to help.

Crafting Your Unique Soundtrack

Every couple has a unique story. Your wedding playlist should reflect that! Think about the songs that have special meaning to you and your partner. Whether it’s the first song you danced to or a track that reminds you of a special moment, these personal touches will make your celebration even more memorable.

Keeping the Energy Up

One of the biggest challenges at weddings is maintaining energy on the dancefloor. A well-curated playlist can make all the difference! I recommend mixing in a variety of genres and tempos to keep guests engaged. Transitioning from high-energy tracks to slower songs can help create a dynamic atmosphere that encourages everyone to join in the fun.

Final Thoughts

So, there you have it! My thoughts on some popular wedding songs that, while beloved, might not always get the dancefloor moving. Remember, it’s your special day, and the music should reflect your personality and style.
